WOW started as an international women's theatre festival in October of 1980 in NYC. Within 18 months Wow found a permanent location and produced works by women and trans people all year around. In 1984 it moved into its current home at 59-61 East 4th Street. Wow is a non-hierarichal collective that is run off of sweat equity, meaning if a member puts work into the space and other members productions, she/he/ze has a right to produce work in the space. Wow provides women and trans people with an opportunity to make art regardless of economic status. Historically Wow has been a space for queer artists and has produced works by provocative theatre practitioners such as, the Five Lesbian Brothers and Holly Hughes.

Its mission includes, "acknowledging the links between different kinds of oppressions and striving to be open to all sexualities and spiritualities, being multilingual and intergenerational, and challenging all oppressions including racism, classism, ableism, sexism, ageism, and sizeism... providing a space for artists to share their ideas, facilitate the exchange of labor and knowledge, and realize their creative visions".

Wow collective meets every Tuesday evening at 6:30, 59-60 East 4th St.!
