Without water, life would not exist. And yet, those of us in developed countries take it for granted; our shelves are stocked with hundreds of branded bottles, and it is freely given at restaurants, at schools, and even in parks. We seem to have an unslakable thirst for it; attained in excess, we throw it away like dirt—just as many developing countries liken its value to gold.

Political upheaval, societal depression, death, and thirst. Lack of clean water is the primary culprit of these in many nations.

The ten countries most in need of water:

Afghanistan.

Ethiopia.

Chad.

Cambodia.

Laos.

Haiti.

Ghana.

India.

Rwanda.

and Bangladesh.

With every bottle of water we thoughtlessly consume, our minds rarely remember these names. In a way, we are so incredibly disconnected from the rest of the world—from people who desperately yearn for the remaining water drops in our discarded bottles.

Ten watercolor paintings and their corresponding poems have been attached to bottles of water in an American supermarket. With these illustrations and poems from native authors, I hope to connect the western shopper—even if just for a moment—to someone living in this unpleasant, thirsty reality.
