About two dozen people barricaded themselves inside a South Side mental health clinic Thursday, protesting Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s plans to consolidate 12 city clinics into six.

The demonstrators, including about 50 people outside the clinic at 63rd Street and South Woodlawn Avenue, said they planned to stay on site until Emanuel agrees to keep all of the public clinics open.

The city claims that The Community Mental Health Council is being shuttered due to financial mismanagement. Center founder Dr. Carl C. Bell, a renowned psychiatrist whose work has been featured in national publications like The New York Times, disputes that and claims the state was slow in providing funding for operations. Dr. Bell planned to stand outside of the closed clinic to inform patients who have not heard about the closing in person and inform them of how and where they could receive continued treatment. When shutting down the previous six clinics, Mayor Emanuel blamed a tight state budget on the closings, but also promised that alternatives to the closed clinics would be provided, either by nearby clinics or by private practices which would receive state funding.
