After the inauguration of Donald Trump in 2017, misogynistic sentiments were amplified due to Trump's policy positions and rhetoric. One position Trump made clear was against Planned Parenthood, which largely threatened women's reproductive rights and access to healthcare. This project was intended to raise money for Planned Parenthood, as Beth Williams Garrett created sculptures of women's heads using recycled materials such as plastic bags. The project brought together members of the community and created a safe space to discuss politics, art, and raise money.

How does this project help?

Timeframe For change

The short-term goal was to gather members of the community to raise awareness and money for Planned Parenthood during a time when women's reproductive rights and access to healthcare felt particularly under attack following the inauguration of Donald Trump.

Notes

The effectiveness of the project on a short-term basis was relatively good, as many sculptures sold and all proceeds went to Planned Parenthood. As someone whose family purchased a sculpture, as additional positive was that the sculpture is often a conversation starter for those who see it and inquire about it.
