In March 1939, a 23-year-old Billie Holiday walked up to the mic at West 4th's Cafe Society in New York City to sing her final song of the night. Per her request, the waiters stopped serving and the room went completely black, save for a spotlight on her face.

Artist Nathaniel Ruleaux leads a community project called “To See If I Could Go Home: A True History Paste-Up” at the Union for Contemporary Art in Omaha on Thursday. His son, Luca, 3, walks away after handing Ruleaux a print to use to demonstrate the project. A member of the Oglala Lakota Nation, Ruleaux often uses his art to bring attention and activism to Native stories.

A Nasa scientist who went viral over his tearful protest on the climate crisis has told The Independent that his activism comes from a sense of desperation to “find something that actually has an impact and moves the needle”.

Peter Kalmus was among a group of scientists arrested last week after they chained themselves to a JPMorgan Chase building in Los Angeles in protest of the bank’s financing of fossil fuels.
