Theatre and Performance with Artistic Activism (LSC) 1 Favorite
I have chosen these examples of artistic activism, specifically activism through theatre and performance because I believe performance is a powerful tool which we can use in social activism to convey current socio-political issues and topics. These theatre related forms of activism link into each other with their combined use of people, narratives, voice, movement and space to create awareness and discussion about specific topics. This specific subsection of artistic activism exposes issues to a wider group of people in a more digestible way, making people who would otherwise feel detached from certain social issues involved in what is happening. It also creates more aware around how people are affected. Other activists could learn strategies of accessible activism from performance art, providing information about current world issues that is understandable for a wide range of people/ages. It is also a testament to the importance of narrative and storytelling within social activism, to deeper connect and relate people to a movement in order to inspire them to mobilise.
