3,000 Candles at the Lincoln Memorial #SoAllCanVote Favorite
At the same site where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech, we lit thousands of candles - one for each signature on our petition - to commemorate the legacy of brave freedom fighters Andrew Goodman, James Chaney, and Michael Schwerner and to stand up for the rights that are once again in peril.
Hundreds joined in spontaneously, ending a day of action that began with a press conference at the U.S. Capitol with Congressman John Lewis, David Goodman (brother of Andrew Goodman) and Wade Henderson (of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights) at the U.S. Capitol. Dozens of volunteers delivered yahrzeit candles to every Member of Congress. Leaders in Oakland, Los Angeles, Denver, North Carolina, and San Diego held vigils and delivered candles to elected officials calling on them to pass the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014.
