For more than 100 years, the American Cancer Society has worked relentlessly to help people stay well, help people get well, find cures and fight back against cancer. In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington to raise awareness and money to help the American Cancer Society fight the nations biggest health concern— cancer, Gordy raised nearly $27,000 and the following year about 340 people showed their support at the overnight event, causing Relay for Life to become a worldwide phenomenon raising nearly $5 billion to fight cancer.
At relay for life communities come together to honor and celebrate cancer survivors, remember those who lost their battle as well as help those who are still fighting, by fighting back. Relay for life is a 24 hour event that occurs with many different teams camping out taking turns walking or running around the track at a local high school, park, or fairground. Because cancer never sleeps it is asked that each team has a team member on the track at all times. Many different events occur, people set up different stands from each team some offer face painting, massages, bracelets, candy bags. Many teams set up these stands and charge a few dollars for their item or service and all proceeds also go towards the American Cancer Society and cancer research. It truly is a great event from the survivor lap to the Luminaria ceremony, you will truly be moved and inspired.
