Mtendo MweMa Project's mission is to provide a safe house and educational opportunities to girls, especially those in danger of female circumcision, early marriage and pregnancy, whom otherwise have no alternative but to return to their villages during the holiday seasons in Kenya, East Africa.

Female genital mutilation is prevalent in the Maasai community especially during the holidays. Girls as young as 8 years old undergo this brutal ritual every year during school breaks. Oftentimes, going home puts them at risk of being circumcised, which results in severe health issues and sometimes death. These girls rarely return to school because their destiny has been altered against their will. The Kenyan government in partnership with several organizations is involved in fighting this age-old tradition, however, progress has been a slow and difficult battle.

With support teams in Kenya and United States, the Mtendo MweMa (Swahili for good deeds) project is in the beginning stages of building a safe holiday house for at-risk girls. This will not only provide protection for the girls while school are closed, but it will also provide educational opportunities including computer training, beading, reading, writing, and other local skills. Now that land has been purchased, we will be breaking ground for building the compound starting in August 2012. The Silent Scream's immediate goal is to raise $30,000 to finance the cost of drilling and developing an onsite water well system to be completed by December 2012.

This process will be filmed as it happens, and the Mtendo MweMa Project will turn this journey of building this "home away from home" into a film documentary that will help educate the world of this brutal ritual.
