Thousands of empty shoes replace marchers at cancelled climate protest in Paris
After French authorities cancelled two climate protests in the wake of the Paris attacks, thousands of would-be marchers kept empty shoes in their place.
The moving installation coincides with the COP21, a climate summit of 195 UN nations in the French capital.
The protest was called by Avaaz
One pair of trainers was left by Ban Ki-Moon, the UN Secretary General.
The shoes have been placed at the Place de la Republique, and according to organisers Avaaz they collectively weigh more than four tonnes.
Some people left notes with their shoes.
One read, ‘S’il faut choisir un combat, c’est le climat’ – roughly translating to, ‘If we are to choose a war, it’s climate’.
Another said, ‘Be vegan, make peace’ – referring to the links between animal agriculture and greenhouse gas emissions, and between rising climates and the Syrian conflict.
Elsewhere, climate protesters came together to form a 1.2mile human chain instead of a march.
I hope this time the conference will lead to something solid,’ said Denis Diderot, a retired university teacher who joined the demonstration wearing the Legion d’Honneur, a prestigious French medal.
Protesters left a 100metre gap in the chain in front of the flowers left near the Bataclan concert hall, as a mark of respect to the victims of the November 13 attacks.
