Queer Crisis (4.25.2014) Favorite

Date:

Jun 24 2014

Location:

New York, NY & Canada

An intervention created by the April 25 2015 Queer Crisis Collective organized by the Helix Queer Performance Network (HQPN), and part of an ongoing queer resistance project mentored by Avram Finkelstein. Over a period of 2 weekends, 8 artists met at the Hemispheric Institute of Performance & Politics to design a creative intervention during Pride month in NYC. The collective addressed the original symbolism of the Pride flag using stickers that drew attention to how the mainstreaming of gay culture has displaced, disenfranchised, and marginalized radical queer culture. The collective handed out stickers during Pride events in NYC and Canada, and placed stickers at targeted locations throughout the city, activating the vital role of public space in queer resistance and discourse.

On the evening of NYC Pride, Sunday, June 29th, 2015, this image was projected onto the street from the window of the Bureau of General Services Queer Division, then located on the Lower East Side.
