The project involved creating portraits of garbage pickers from the Jardim Gramacho landfill near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, using materials found in the landfill itself.

Muniz worked with the garbage pickers to create the portraits, which were then photographed and exhibited in galleries around the world. The project aimed to raise awareness of the plight of the garbage pickers and the environmental issues associated with landfill waste.

In addition to the portraits, the Waste Land project also involved a documentary film that chronicled the creation of the artwork and the lives of the garbage pickers. The film, directed by Lucy Walker, was released in 2010 and received widespread critical acclaim, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature.

Overall, the Waste Land project is a powerful example of how art can be used to raise awareness of important social and environmental issues and promote activism and change.
