On October 2nd, three animal rights activists shocked the world with an extraordinarily bold act, organized by Alex Bojour. They all were branded alive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RA4q1pU957c) as a symbolic act of identification with the animals that are branded and used by the human species, conveying the message of animal equality. Their blood flows like our blood; their pain feels like our pain; their suffering is the same as our suffering.

These activists, extreme by their own definition, received surprisingly positive feedback from all over the world and a huge number of views on YouTube, tens of thousands on the very first days. A widely publicized international tattoo event of identification with “269”, was launched on November 1st to build awareness of what has become known around the globe as simply “269.”

The next international 269 tattoo event is taking place on December 18th, the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, reminding the world that non-human animal slaves are still waiting for their liberation. The organizers and the participants stress that the lessons of human slavery should be learned and that such things as the number of limbs, skin texture, or the shape of the os sacrum, are equally insufficient reasons as skin color to exploit sentient beings. As Jeremy Bentham famously wrote, “the question should be neither ‘can they reason?’ nor ‘can they talk?’ but ‘can they suffer?’
