Fanism - Tallahassee Native John Gertomo's Flock Favorite 

On a now defunct MMO, users rallied together under a fake religion to protest religious groups proselytizing on the messageboards.

The fake religion was said to be an offshoot of Christianity, the founder John Gertomo, a former Baptist in Tallahassee at the turn of the century unhappy with the state of his religion. Initially, digital media was found ungodly by the sect, but his followers realized the recruiting potential of the internet so they took to various online games to spread their message.
