LONG BEFORE WOMEN finally — though incompletely — won the right to vote in the United States in 1920, they were finding ways to influence politics. In late 18th-century New England, colonial women would make muster cakes — spiced, doorstop-heavy confections flecked with candied fruit and soaked in alcohol — for soldiers being gathered (or “mustered”) to fight in the Revolutionary War.

In 2009, clergy from El Oratorio Don Bosco in Italy moved to Polloc, a remote town in Peru near Cajamarca, and began to build a mid-sized cathedral. In conjunction to the construction, they opened up a workshop next to the construction site for the local youth to engage in art-making programming after school and on the weekends.

"As of October 2009, Retznei boasts a new centre. In the middle of the square the black contours of a concrete surface stand out, reminiscent of the shape of a pond. If you step on the Platform, you notice that the ground gives slightly and that it sways. Invisibly but noticeably, water reveals itself as a key component of this art work by Michael Kienzer. The water carries the Platform and us, while we are walking or standing on it.
